Dobos Torta When hearing about Hungary, people often think first of goulash soup. The Dobos cake would surely come a close second for many Europeans. Master Baker Jozsef Dobos created the confection for the clientele of his restaurant during the grand days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. | Gesztenye Torta (Chestnut Cream Torte) This is a very traditional Hungarian cake, often served at birthdays, weddings, or as the grand finale to Christmas dinner. | Kuglof Considered by many to be the queen of confections offered at the famous Gerbeaud pastry caf?? in Budapest. It elegantly presides over the dozens of fancy creations with confidence, for there nothing can take its place when served with a whipped-cream-topped coffee as an afternoon snack. | Beigli (Strudel) This is a traditional pastry which enjoys many names, from the Austrian-sounding Beigli, to the Hungarian "Patko" (meaning 'horseshoe'). To a Hungarian, Christmas without beigli would be unimaginable! | ??z Gerinc A peculiar name for this visually striking dessert, ??z Gerinc literally translates to "deer's spine". | Chocolate Danube I have to humbly admit this is one of my own creations. I named it "The Chocolate Danube", because one of my clients described as a 'river of chocolate'! And though not a true Hungarian creation, many of the fine tastes of central Europe are represented in this sumptuous dessert. | Rig?©ø Jancsi It was the end of the nineteenth century, and Rig?©ø Jancsi (we would know him as Johnny Rig?©ø, but in Hungarian the surname comes first) was playing the violin at a Parisian hotel. In the audience was a Belgian prince and his beautiful new American wife, Klara. | Megyes Lep??ny (Cherry Squares) Sour cherries are an immensely popular fruit in Hungary. They are enjoyed fresh off the tree, made into Cold Cherry Soup, preserved as a compote to be savoured through the cold winter months, and, naturally, baked into scrumptious desserts! | Wedding Cakes Preparing for a wedding is an exciting time in your life. There is so much to plan, so many ideas to consider, so many choices to make. | Special Occassions Homeland Bakery's custom designed cakes are as beautiful to look at as they are delicious tot.
