Touch and movement have been used since ancient times to heal and to enhance well being. Today healing massage techniques are used in several different health professions, including therapeutic massage and bodywork, physical therapy, athletic training, nursing, chiropractic, osteopathy, and naturopathy. Massage is used somewhat differently in these professions according to their scope of practice and theoretical perspectives, but they share a common bond, that is, the massage techniques themselves. Massage has many uses based on the Western scientific viewpoint. It may be used to affect specific body structures, for example, in relaxing specific muscles, increasing range of motion at a joint or freeing the fascia. It may be used to affect basic body processes.

Stress Reduction and Relaxation Response
The endocrine and nervous system responses to stress are known to have harmful effects if continued over a long period of time. Immune system disorders caused by chronic stress include frequent infections, autoimmune disease and possibly cancer.
Immune System Function
Massage treatment designed to elicit the relaxation response, can assist in improvement of the immune system function by increasing lymphatic flow and, indirectly, by reducing the negative effects of stress.
Metabolic Balance in Muscle Tone
The muscles maintain a chemical balance through normal activity. As the muscles contract, they rid themselves of metabolic waste products by "milking" these toxins into the lymphatic and venous flow. Additionally, they assist lymphatic and venous flow.
Pain
Pain reduction is one of the benefits of massage that follows from its ability to elicit the relaxation response, relieve muscle tension and improve circulation. There is some evidence that massage induces the release of endorphins and enkephalins.
Mental and Emotional Effects
The mental and emotional effects of massage include increased mental clarity, reduced anxiety, and feelings of overall well being. A phenomenon called emotional release, which is an interesting interface of body, mind, and emotion, may also occur during massage.
